Natural Lash Shedding vs Poor Retention: How to Tell the Difference

Not all lash loss is a retention problem.

One of the most common concerns from clients (and even lash artists) is:

“My lash extensions are falling out too fast”

But here’s what many people don’t realise:

Not all lash loss means bad retention.

Sometimes, what looks like poor retention is actually completely normal shedding.

Why This Matters

If you misread what’s happening, you’ll:

  • Try to fix something that isn’t broken

  • Change your products unnecessarily

  • Blame your technique (when it’s actually fine)

Or worse…

Clients start thinking your work doesn’t last—when it actually does.

What Is Natural Lash Shedding?

Your natural lashes grow in cycles.

Each lash:

  • Grows

  • Rests

  • Sheds

And this happens continuously.

So every day, it’s normal to lose:

  • A few natural lashes

  • Along with the extensions attached to them

This is completely normal and unavoidable.

What Normal Shedding Looks Like

When a lash sheds naturally:

  • The extension is still attached

  • You’ll see the natural lash connected to it

  • It falls out as one piece

This means:

✔️ Your attachment was correct
✔️ Your retention is working

What Poor Retention Looks Like

Poor retention is different.

You’ll notice:

  • Extensions falling off without a natural lash attached

  • Loose or “popped off” extensions

  • Lashes falling out shortly after the appointment

This indicates:

The bond between the extension and natural lash wasn’t strong enough.

Quick Way to Tell the Difference

If you’re unsure, check the fallen lashes:

  • Natural lash attached? → Normal shedding

  • No natural lash? → Retention issue

Simple—but very important.

Why This Gets Confused So Often

Many clients (and even artists):

  • Don’t check what’s falling out

  • Assume all lash loss = bad retention

So they:

  • Panic

  • Blame the artist

  • Start changing things unnecessarily

When It’s Actually a Retention Problem

It’s likely a retention issue if:

  • Lashes are falling out within days

  • Many extensions are coming off without lashes

  • Retention is consistently poor across clients

That’s when you need to look at:

  • Attachment

  • Technique

  • Lash porosity

  • Your overall system

Educating Your Clients (This Helps A Lot)

This small piece of education can change everything.

When clients understand:

  • Lash cycles are normal

  • Some shedding is expected

They:

  • Trust your work more

  • Stop worrying unnecessarily

  • Have realistic expectations

The Goal: Consistent, Predictable Retention

You can’t stop natural shedding.

But you can control:

  • How well your extensions stay attached

  • How consistent your results are

Good retention means lashes stay attached until the natural lash sheds.

If You’re Still Unsure…

If you’re constantly questioning whether your retention is actually the problem, it usually means you don’t have full clarity on your system yet.
